By these days was launched one of two aluminum 35 m LOA hybrid vessels for servicing of the wind farms in the open sea. The design of the vessels was done jointly by the UK and Australian design bureaus, construction takes place in China.
The operator of this ship is company Ørsted – one of the world’s biggest wind farm operators. The vessel intended to transfer a service team of 24 persons on a distance of 56-65 nm from the shore – to the place in the North Sea, where the wind farms are located.
The vessel of catamaran type is equipped by hybrid propulsion system, which is consists of 4 IPS pods, two of them driven by Volvo Penta D13 diesel engines, the other two – from the electrical engines.
Therefore, it is always the choice – to sail only at “diesel power” – or to use a diesel-electric variant, or only electric – or batteries only.
The electrical power created onboard by the few Volvo Penta D8 MG gensets with variable speed – this is the result of cooperation between Volvo Penta and Danfoss Editron – a specialist of electromobility and controls – and it not the only one. Taking into consideration the speed of development of the batteries, other electric components – we can see in nearest future more interesting projects – like, for example – ARMADA fleet of unmanned vessels – coming soon!
